Today, one of my son’s classmates brought a gun to school. I don’t know why this 17-year-old had a gun in his backpack. I don’t know what he planned to do with it. I don’t know if he intended to harm someone, or if he was just being stupid and reckless in the way that teens are stupid and reckless. I might find out when this student comes before the Board of Education for a disciplinary hearing, because I’m on the Board of Education. Eventually, we’ll all learn what the police can tell us.
Omg this is one of my deepest fears, since we live in rural gun country, although it seems that all of America is gun country. I'm so happy that it was resolved without any loss of precious life or trauma. I do hope that boy gets the help he needs. Big hugs to you from this fellow Mom.🤗🤗🤗
I live in a rural area, too. Getting adjusted to the gun culture was... not easy. Schools are a ghost town on the first day of deer season. But I have a lot of friends who hunt. Friends who are ex-military who shoot for sport. Responsible gun owners all, but the sheer volume of guns here is unnerving. Although, as you note, when you live in a country with more guns than people, we're all living in gun country...
And my kid is trans, so I'm pretty much always on high-alert when it comes to safety. Something I'm sure you understand...

Yes, sadly, I am aware of that struggle. My trans son is in middle school right now and I am pretty much always on high alert.
